IACLD Message: Happy World Metrology Day

The Importance of Metrology in Medical Laboratories: Precision That Saves Lives
Metrology, the science of measurement, is a foundational yet often unseen pillar of public health and medical services. While it is commonly associated with engineering and industrial sectors, metrology plays a vital role in accurate diagnostics, clinical decision-making, and patient safety within medical laboratories.

Why Is Metrology Important in Medicine?
Every test result in a clinical laboratory is based on a measured value — whether it’s blood glucose, hormone levels, or drug concentrations. Even the smallest inaccuracy can lead to:
•    Misdiagnosis
•    Incorrect treatment
•    Or delayed critical intervention

Metrology as a Pillar of Quality Assurance
Metrology provides the scientific foundation for the reliability, comparability, and reproducibility of laboratory test results, through principles such as:
•    Measurement traceability
•    Measurement uncertainty
•    Instrument calibration
•    Biological reference intervals
These elements ensure that laboratory data can be trusted across time, locations, and systems.

Metrology in Standards and Accreditation
International standards such as ISO 15189:2022 require that all testing methods, instruments, and measurement systems in medical laboratories be traceable to national or international measurement references.
Such traceability is only possible with a robust national and international metrological infrastructure.

Final Statement the Accreditation Body of the Iranian Association of Clinical Laboratory Doctors (IACLD):
As we mark the year 1404 (2025) in Iran, we commemorate 150 years since the global recognition of metrology and 100 years since its formal establishment in Iran.
In its commitment to improving the quality of health services, IACLD considers it a core responsibility to promote, support, and institutionalize metrology within the national healthcare system.

The IACLD extends its sincere appreciation to all professionals and contributors in calibration and metrology, especially in medical laboratories.

At IACLD, we believe: “Every precise unit of measurement is a cornerstone of patient confidence and well-being.”
